Summary of ICAAL 12
The 12th International Conference on Austroasiatic Linguistics (ICAAL 12) was held in hybrid format, hosted by the Linguistics Department, International College, Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand, October 23-25, 2024 and organized by Ryan Gehrmann. ICAAL is the principal regular meeting for presenting and discussing research on Austroasiatic languages and linguistics. This meeting was particularly exciting, as it was the first in-person ICAAL meeting since ICAAL 8 in 2019.
The meeting was held in comfortable surroundings in the Singtoh Chantrakul seminar room, Sirindhorn Learning Center, Payap University. The technical elements of the conference were exceptionally smooth, thanks to the efforts of two dediated officers from Payap University’s IT department.
The conference began with registration, where in-person participants received welcome gifts including a hard copy of Austroasiatic Linguistics in honour of Gérard Diffloth (1939-2023) (see below). The conference was then opened with remarks from Ryan Gehrmann, ICAAL Continuity Committee member and organizer of ICAAL 12, and from Paul Sidwell, ICAAL Continuity Committee chair. The first day’s program then began with a keynote presentation from Paul Sidwell. A keynote address was given each day of the conference, with presentations by Gregory D.S. Anderson at the beginning of day two and by Marc Brunelle & James Kirby to close out the conference on day three. Finally, the conference ended with a business meeting, in which it was resovled that ICAAL 13 should continue the successful hybrid format of ICAAL 12 and that it should be held in 2025, continuing the recent pattern of holding ICAAL conferences on an annual basis. Another notable resolution coming out of the business meeting was that a memorial volume in honour of Michel Ferlus should be produced before ICAAL 13, with Paul Sidwell & Mathias Jenny volunteering to serve as co-editors.

Keynote Talks
In a first for ICAAL, three keynote talks we arranged for ICAAL 12. Each of these provided a synthesis and update on a long-term research project that is closely associated with ICAAL. These scholars’ efforts have led to insights that are of substantial benefit for the field of Austroasiatic linguistics and beyond. These are projects that the ICAAL community should know about!

Book Release:
Austroasiatic Linguistics in honour of Gérard Diffloth (1939-2023)
This book is available to download free of charge
At ICAAL 11, it was decided that the ICAAL community would undertake to produce an edited volume in memory of our departed colleague Gérard Diffloth. We are pleased to report that this project has been completed successfully, and released Austroasiatic Linguistics in honour of Gérard Diffloth (1939-2023) during ICAAL 12. All in-person participants received a print version of the book, and a pdf version has been made available here on the website (see link above). Many thanks to those who contributed chapters, to those who commented on drafts and a special thanks to Paul Sidwell for his editorial leadership, which made this project possible.
